NUGS-UCC Embarks on Clean-up Exercise

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Local Chapter of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has organized a five-hour clean-up exercise on campus. The exercise, which was undertaken in collaboration with the UCC Central Cadet Corps, Department of Environmental Science and the Environmental Health Section, was aimed at sensitizing members of the University community on the need to keep the environment clean. Some of the areas where the clean-up exercise took place were the Parliament House, Science Market, Old Library and the Central Administration. The students cleaned gutters, swept the streets and also weeded bushy areas. Addressing participants after the exercise, the Local NUGS President, Mr. Albert Awortwi Sagoe, expressed his gratitude to the students for the massive participation in the exercise. He urged members of the University community to maintain a clean and healthy environment at all times so as to stay away from diseases, adding that "Cleanliness is next to Godliness." The Local NUGS President advised students to refrain from indiscriminate disposal of waste on campus and encouraged them to make good use of the waste bins provided by the Students' Representative Council (SRC) at vantage places to complement waste and sanitation management on campus. Mr. Sagoe commended the Environmental Health Section for providing the Union with the needed equipment to make the exercise a success. He therefore urged other associations on campus to organize regular clean-up exercises to support the efforts of the Environmental Health Section to keep the University clean. The Local NUGS President used the occasion to call on members of the University community to patronize the upcoming NUGS-UCC Ladies' Week Celebration, dubbed "OBAASIMA", which is scheduled to come off from 11th to 18th February, 2017.
