The University of Cape Coast has graduated 56 qualified medical doctors at the First Session of the 51st Congregation dedicated to the School of Medical Sciences (SMS).
The fresh graduates made up of 35 males and 21 females were conferred with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB, ChB) degrees after successfully completing their six-year programme. This brings the total number of medical doctors produced by UCCSMS to 299 since its inception in 2007.
UCCSMS Producing Quality Doctors
The Chairman of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council (MDC), Professor Paul K. Nyame, has noted that the University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS), has proven to be progressive in innovation, curricula and the provision of facilities for teaching and research.
Prof. Nyame said the School has attracted into its leadership, some of the brightest in medical academia in Ghana. “Those of us who now have to regulate the training for the profession, and its subsequent practice, have relied very frequently on the human resource of this School,” he indicated.
The Centre for Gender, Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD) is organising a four-day workshop for student facilitators in University.
The facilitators comprising representatives of the various halls of residence will serve as liaison officers who will provide counselling services and also educate students on issues of relationship and sexual harassment.
The Third Research Awards and Grants (RAG) Ceremony has been held under the auspices of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) at the School of Medical Sciences.
The annual award scheme is aimed at motivating and honouring faculty members who distinguished themselves through impact-oriented research as well as those who have shown potential in the same regard.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, Prof. John Owusu Gyapong, has challenged the University of Cape Coast to channel more funds into research to enhance its visibility.
Prof. Gyapong noted that UCC could only become relevant as a world class university and feature in the Global Higher Education rankings if substantial investments was made in research.
<p>The Department of Sociology and Anthropology has received a consignment of books and some projectors from Prof. Nelson Kofie of the Northern Virginia Community College, Virginia, United States of America.</p>
<p>In addition to this, Prof. Kofie has donated books and other teaching materials valued at $ 60, 000 to the University Library and some departments in UCC in 2018.</p>
A Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow from Central Connecticut State University, United States of America (USA), Dr Fumilayo Showers, has observed that many West African immigrants are attracted to heath care work in the USA because of relatively high wages and favourable work conditions.
The University of Cape Coast has won the 2018 edition of the Impact Africa Debate Championship & Intercontinental Public Speaking Contest ahead of University of Ibadan Nigeria and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology which was held from the 23rd to 27th of July at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, has met a team from Nevada State, United States of America to find areas of possible collaboration between the University and the state of Nevada.
The Nevada team which was made up of seven officials from the University of Nevada was led by the Deputy Director of Economic Development, Nevada Governor’s Office, Derek Armstrong. Other members were Dr. Mary Croughan, Dr. Mridul Gautam, Dr. Robert Goldberg, Seema Gautam, Dr. Bo Bernhard, Carina Black and Bill Payne.
A senior lecturer at the University of Dayton, in the United States of America (USA), Dr. Dorothy Mensah-Aggrey, has called on leaders to empathise with their followers to ensure their holistic development.
