Programme

Agribusiness

Programme Rationale

Ghana’s agricultural sector is still operating with rudimentary tools and undeveloped backward and forward linkages, such that the push-pull mechanism that should cause the productive sub-sector to grow is not having the expected positive effects. Agro-industry and the inputs delivery system which are to provide the forward and backward linkages do not possess the requisite manpower, knowledge and competencies to develop these important sub-sectors to support production. At the same time, the production sub-sector also lacks the manpower, requisite knowledge and skills to increase and sustain agricultural output to feed people and industries. It is against this background that the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension of the School of Agriculture, University of Cape Coast, Ghana is proposing a new programme in agribusiness aimed at producing personnel who will be able to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge and skills to meet the human resource needs and challenges of low-input low-output agriculture, for agribusiness development and increased productivity.
