Omanhene of Agona Traditional area donates 50-acre land to the University of Cape Coast.

The Omanhene of the Agona Traditional Area, Nana Okofo Katakyie Nyarko Eku X, has, on behalf of the Chiefs and people of the Traditional Area, donated a 50-acre parcel of land to the University of Cape Coast for the construction of a Study Centre under the University’s distance education programme. The donation was in fulfillment of a pledge made by the Omanhene in response to an earlier request by the Vice-Chancellor of the University during the Jubilee Awards Ceremony held by the Agona District Assembly. The Omanhene, accompanied by some Chiefs and Elders of the Traditional Area as well as the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Area, Hon. Samuel Obodai and the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Ben Mensah, led the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof. E.A. Obeng and other officials of the University to inspect the land. He said that the donation was the Traditional Area’s contribution to the promotion of education in Agona in particular and the Ghana as a whole. He indicated the Traditional Council’s readiness to assist the University in every way possible to develop the land. Accepting the land, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his personal gratitude and that of the University to the Omanhene for the kind gesture. He indicated that the University intended to develop the land into a satellite campus specifically for the running of distance education programmes. He said the University hoped to start with the construction of office, lecture and hostel facilities as well as modern information and communication technology (ICT)-based infrastructure for the delivery of lectures. He noted that, given its location, the land would need to be provided with an access road as well as basic utility services if it was to serve the University’s objective. The MP and DCE of the Area both promised to work towards extending the needed basic utilities and access road to the land. They requested that the relevant site as well as land use plans be made available to enable them to initiate the necessary actions. Earlier in the day, the Vice-Chancellor and his team of officials comprising, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Yakubu, Deputy Registrar (LCGS), Nana Kojo Danso-Mensah, Director of the Centre for Continuing Education, Mr. Albert K. Koomson, Deputy Director of Development, Mr. Philip T. Okletey, Deputy Director (Pharmaceutical Services), Mr. J.K. Obeng, Estate Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Gyamfi, Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame and the Administrative Secretary (Office of the Vice-Chancellor), Mr. Opoku Oku-Afari paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene and his Chiefs and Elders at the Palace at Agona Nyakrom.
