Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Cape Coast calls on VC
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Cape Coast, Hon. Anthony Egyir Aikins has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, at her office to formally introduce himself as the MCE of Cape Coast.
Hon. Aikins said quite apart from introducing himself as the MCE, he also recognised that UCC had a crucial role to play as far as transforming the Central Region was concerned. He wondered why there was no relationship between the University and the Cape Coast Assembly, given that UCC had rich human resources as well as research work on Cape Coast. The MCE, an alumnus of the University, stressed that he believed collaboration between UCC and the Assembly would be a strong force to move Cape Coast forward, adding that "development should be detached from politics".
He called for innovative ways where the Assembly would be able to position itself well with UCC in revenue generation by identifying revenue sources as well as explore other emerging situations.
Contributing to the discussion, the Registrar, Mr. Isaac Ohene intimated that it was a good idea visiting the University, as UCC had been seen as a different entity though an integral part of the Municipality. Mr. Ohene said that UCC had problems with the areas of sanitation as the University uses its own resources to collect garbage for the University and the surrounding communities. He implored the MCE to help take steps to solve problems of encroachment on University land once and for all.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Yakubu indicated that by virtue of the University's location, it took care of the surrounding communities with respect to provision of water, light and sanitation and therefore requested the Assembly to include the University in its development projects, especially for the surrounding communities. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the Fosu Lagoon could be a tourism centre if properly harnessed, saying several research works had been done by academic staff of the University.
In her contribution, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang welcomed the idea of collaboration and said that with regard to the Fosu Lagoon, there was no need for fresh research as there was enough already, and advised the Assembly to choose works that students had done as a guide and implement them.
The Vice-Chancellor advised that the women who stood in the sun everyday processing palm kernel near Adisadel College could be assisted by providing sheds for them to ease the hardship they were going through. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor also added his voice by saying the Assembly could set up small cottage industries in palm kernel oil production for the women.
Accompanying the MCE were the Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Peter Dery, and the Metro Planning Officer, Mr. Justice Amoah.
