Seminar on ethical research held

The School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) in collaboration with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Legon, has organised a seminar on the theme “Ethical Conduct of Research in a Dynamic World” at the University Auditorium, North Campus.

The seminar sought to justify the need to establish an IRB in the University of Cape Coast to help supervise standards of research.

The seminar was officially opened by the Dean of the SGSR, Prof. Albert A. Addo- Quaye who was the Chairman for the occasion.

Giving the general overview of the essence of an IRB, Rev. Samuel Ayete-Nyampong of NMIMR said its mission was to consider risks and minimize them, and make sure the conduct of research followed established standards. He said research he had done indicated that UCC was one of the few institutions without an IRB, and therefore recommended that one should be established at the University.

Mr. Okyere Boateng, also of the NMIMR delivered his lectures on the ethical issues to be considered in the conduct of research including “respect for norms, justice, confidentiality and compensation.”

Mr. Boateng said research on “human subjects” must be with the informed consent of the individual concerned and concluded that “research must be pursued but not at the expense of exploiting others”.

Other speakers included Dr. Kwasi Odoi-Agyarko, Ms. Sarah Akrofi-Quarcoo, Mrs. Chris Dadzie and Mrs. Nana Amuah-Sekyi who spoke on “Conduct of Research:

Community Perspective”, “Media and Research”, and “Legal Caution Regarding Human Subject Research” respectively.

All the panelists agreed that there was the need for all researchers of human subjects to consider the rights of the one or group of people being researched on and that adequate compensation should be paid to such persons or group of people.
