UPS Band Inaugurated

The University Primary School has inaugurated its newly-formed School Band at a grand ceremony which took place at the premises of the School.

The Band which is made up of 18 males and 10 females is the first of its kind at the pre-University level on Campus.

Inaugurating the Band, Flying Officer Dominic Aryee of the Ghana Airforce in Takoradi applauded the idea which led to the establishment of the Band. He noted that it was a good foundation for the future excellence of the pupils in the playing of musical instruments adding, that with discipline and determination, the Band would stand the test of time.

Flying Officer Aryee implored the Department of Music and Theatre Studies to assist the pupils in the Band to read staff notes to distinguish them from other bands. He then promised that the Ghana Airforce Band would adopt the UPS Band to help train the pupils to attain standard performance.

Prof. N.N. Kofie of the Department of Music and Theatre Studies, who represented the Pro-Vice-Chancellor as the Guest Speaker, said that when children are engaged in extra curricula activities such as playing instruments in a band, it helps to unearth their potentials.

Prof. Kofie indicated that, according to research, the study of Music enhances students' verbal and quantitative abilities and therefore the pupils should be encouraged to engage in such extra curricula activities to equip them with career skills which would enable them to play musical instruments in future.

The Chief Patron of the School Band, Dr. G.K.T. Oduro said that regimental bands promote and facilitate discipline among the youth which enables them to live better lives.

Dr. Oduro announced that the Band needed about Gh¢7,000 to acquire additional instruments to enhance the quality of their performances. He therefore appealed to all stakeholders to support the School in that direction for the Band to succeed and thrive.

Earlier, in a welcome address, the Headmistress, Ms. Agnes Gyimah said that the main rationale for establishing the Band was to unearth other talents and skills in the pupils. She said that it was also intended to entertain guests at functions of the School and the University as well as to generate some income for the School.

She noted that when pupils are exposed to the playing of musical instruments, it enables them to be better directed in life and to appreciate music. Ms. Gyimah expressed her profound gratitude to all who contributed in diverse ways to ensure the establishment and inauguration of the Band.

The School Band put up some musical performances to entertain the invited guests. The Band earned the support of the Ghana Airforce Band.

An appeal for funds to support the Band yielded Gh¢270.00 cash and Gh¢ 730.00 in pledges to be redeemed.
