Locally manufactured UPS unit advocated
A Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (DCSIT). Mr. Harrison Adjei Quaye has advocated the use of locally manufactured Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Unit to address the persistent power outages in the country.
Mr. Quaye said this when he recently delivered a lecture on the "Modification and Maintenance of Uninterruptible
Power Supply" (UPS), at the Academic Board Chamber, North Campus.
According to Mr. Quaye, the improved UPS Unit was designed to promote the conservation of the environment, prolong the lifespan of electronic equipment, protect equipment from power interruption, and reduce maintenance cost.
Mr. Quaye explained that his advocacy had been prompted by findings of a research which he undertook two years ago to identify "alternative source of power for domestic and industrial applications as well as demonstrate the need and potential for locally manufactured UPS units."
In his closing remarks, the Chairman for the workshop, Mr. Carl Hope Korkpoe of the DCSIT said he was delighted the lecture had taken place because it had provided a deep understanding as to what to buy and what not to buy. He said for instance that most UPS on the Ghanaian market, unlike the one designed by Mr. Quaye are not suitable for our tropical condition.
Participants at the workshop later witnessed a demonstration of the prototype UPS unit and how it worked.
