Interaction with newly-appointed academic staff
Interaction with newly-appointed academic staff
The Staff Training and Development Section, in collaboration with the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (DAPQA) has recently organized a two-day workshop for newly-appointed lecturers at the Academic Board Chamber.
The workshop was organized not only to afford the newly-appointed lecturers the opportunity to be exposed at first hand to the demands of their jobs but also to interact with some of their senior colleagues.
Opening the seminar on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor (who was away on official duty), the Senior Assistant Registrar, Staff Training and Development Section, Dr. E. O. Agyenim-Boateng gave a brief background to the seminar and stated that it was one of the routine seminars normally organized for newly-appointed lecturers.
The Resource Persons for the seminar were the Director, DAPQA, Prof. Kobina Yankson; Director, IEPA, Dr. Albert Dare; Vice-Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. F. K. Amedahe; Prof. K. N. Eyeson and the Deputy Registrar, DAA, Mr. Isaac Ohene. Topics discussed at the workshop included: “The Role of the Quality Assurance Directorate in Effective Teaching, Research and Extension Services in the University, Teaching Methods:-Teacher-centred/Student-centred, Assessment Criteria, Mentoring and the University Grading System.”
The newly-appointed lecturers had a fruitful interaction with the seasoned facilitators. The workshop gave the newly-appointed lecturers the opportunity to share their concerns on issues such as accommodation, mentorship, registration and grouping of students. Other issues centred on hospitality for those returning from study leave and the need for faculties to complement the efforts of the Staff Training and Development Section by organizing orientation programmes for the new staff.
It was therefore recommended that a “starter pack” should be provided by the Division of Human Resource for the newly-appointed lecturers. Observers believe that, the orientation programme was very successful and it is hoped that the information provided and the useful experiences shared would enable them to function effectively as university lecturers.
