A four-member team from the MOH calls on VC
A four-member team from the Ministry of Health, led by its Chief Director, Lepowura M. N. D. Jawula has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor at the Council Chamber, South Campus.
The visit was a follow-up to a letter sent to the Ministry of Health to upgrade the Regional Hospital to a Teaching Hospital status to enhance training at the University of Cape Coast Medical School. Welcoming the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof. E. A. Obeng gave the assurance that “UCC is committed to set its Medical School on a firm ground.”
Ensuing discussions centred on several issues including accreditation, employment of more lecturers for the UCC Nursing program, assessing physical facilities at the Regional Hospital, financial facilities available for the upgrading and getting the process of upgrading started.
Consequently, a team to oversee the upgrading process was formed, with Prof. H. S. Amonoo-Koufi as the convener. Members were Dr. Edward Addae, Dr. Aaron Ofei, Dr. Sarbeng, Mr. Amankwah, Mr. James Antwi. Others were Mr. E. P. Owusu, UCC, Mr. Edward Marfo-Yiadom, UCC and Mr. Tetteh, UCC.
Rev. Prof. Obeng stressed that UCC was mindful of accreditation issues and had therefore started re-accrediting its programmes. He disclosed that UCC was in the process of acquiring a loan of £10m for the project, but was quick to state that it needed government’s approval.
The leader of the team, Lepowura Jawula thanked UCC for the warm welcome accorded them and indicated that they would assist in upgrading the Regional Hospital to prevent similar initial difficulties the Tamale Teaching Hospital encountered when the University of Development Studies was established.
Present were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Yakubu; the Registrar, Mr. S. Kofi Ohene; the Head of the Department of Nursing, Dr. P. M. Siakwa; Lecturer at the Department of Nursing, Prof. Janet Gross and a cross-section of senior members in the University.
