Department of History receives educational materials
An Australian Professor, David Doward, has donated assorted educational materials comprising computers and books with over 4000 titles to the Department of History.
Speaking at the brief ceremony, Prof. Doward said the shipment of the items was made possible by the Australian High Commission, an expensive undertaking which was worth commending. He said in contemplating where to express his gesture, UCC came to the fore, and as he put it, “there was no better place than UCC.”
The Australian High Commissioner, Mr. J. Richardson said that though his assistance fell outside the strict norm of the Commission, he thought it was part of his country’s contribution to the year-long celebration of Ghana’s 50th Anniversary.
Receiving the items, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof. E. A. Obeng described the offer as encouraging and cautioned that books should not be ignored, considering the fact that electronic data which is in common use now could fail. He said that the bulk of the books would be in the Library for general use.
The Head of the Department of History, Dr. S. Y. Boadi-Siaw who welcomed the guest recounted the numerous support which the Department had received from many stakeholders, especially Dr. K. Adu-Boahen who made it possible through correspondence to get Prof. Doward to donate the books to UCC. He said the Department would make good use of the items received.
Present at the ceremony were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Yakubu; the Registrar, Mr. S. Kofi Ohene; the Ag. Librarian, Mr. A. K. Martey; the Director of Finance, Mr. Caxton Oduro-Donkor; Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. D. D. Kuupole; Head, Department of Religious Studies, Prof. B. A. Ntreh, and other members of the Department of History.
