Disadvantaged Students To Use ICT Facilities
With effect from this academic year, physically challenged, visually impaired, low vision students on/off campus, distant learners and able students would be able to access different sources of information from computers in the Library.
This has been made possible due to an ICT facility being installed in the University Library with the view to providing information accessibility and facilitate information gathering for all categories of students, both at UCC and elsewhere.
According to the Acting Librarian, Mr. A. K. Martey, the project, which is being sponsored by TALIF, is valued at $ 530,000. Mr. Martey noted further that the project is made up of four sub-projects, namely, (i) the Physically-Challenged/Visually-Impaired and Low Vision Project (completed) (ii) the Digital Library Project (iii) the Datad Project and (iv) the Library Automation Project.
Touching on the basis for the project, the Acting Librarian said that the Library had, over the years, provided services to able and on-campus students with less attention to the disadvantaged. He added that the Library had identified the need to provide ICT accessibility to the disadvantaged of which the able ones would also benefit.
Mr. Martey expressed the hope that the entire project would be completed by December, 2007.
