TEACHER EDUCATION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: ISSUES, PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES
Aim

The Faculty of Education, UCC, is organizing an international conference on Teacher Education to address issues confronting Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The conference will bring together researchers, teacher educators, curriculum developers and policy makers to discuss the current state of teacher education in Sub-Saharan Africa, identify issues and challenges and explore possibilities for new directions in teacher education.

Sub-Themes
The following sub-themes have been identified for the guidance of participants:
  1. Alternative Models of Teacher Preparation
  2. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Teacher Education
  3. Funding Teacher Education
  4. Practicum in Teacher Education
  5. Professionalisation of Teaching
  6. vi.Teacher Motivation and Retention
    vii.Information, Communication and Technology in Teacher Education
    viii.Teacher Effectiveness

    Conference Sessions
    There will be three sessions as follows:

    1. Thematic Sessions – These sessions will feature presentation of high quality papers which report empirical research or analytical review on selected sub-themes. An individual or a team may present.
    2. Panel Discussion – In these sessions, small groups of people (about 10 or less in a group) will engage in a discussion of research, a case study, or an issue. Works on related sub-themes of the conference may be combined. Presenters may provide participants with a complete paper or a brief (1-2 pages) written summary. A facilitator will coordinate the session.
    3. Poster Sessions – These sessions will be used for reporting on work in progress, presentation of research or policy proposals, and summaries of research findings. Graduate students working in the field of teacher education are particularly encouraged to participate in these sessions.
    4. Conference Sessions
      Participants intending to present papers in any of the sessions should send abstracts of not more than 200 words to the address below by 15th June, 2008.

    CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

      Papers
      Although a wide range of papers are welcomed, selection would be aided by:
      1. A brief statement of the purpose of the study.
      2. The nature of the data and the method(s) of analysis used.
      3. Summary of the initial assumptions and the argument.
      4. An indication of the likely findings or conclusions.

      GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

    1. Format
      Format of papers should comprise the first separate sheet with the author’s name, address, affiliation and the title of the paper, and a second sheet containing the abstract and the remaining sheets detailing the content and references. All abstracts should be not more than 200 words and on one side of A4 paper. Please send one hard copy to the address above and one soft copy as an attachment to the e-mail addresses above.
    2. Mode of Submission of Paper
      Use Microsoft word and IBM compatible PC. Submit three hard copies and a compact disc (750MB),containing the paper.
    3. Equipment for Paper Presentation
      OHP, Telemeter and a Laptop would be available. Please ensure that you indicate Audio Visual (AV) requirements at the top of the abstract.

      DURATION OF PAPER PRESENTATION
      All paper presentations would last 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes discussion. Speakers are reminded to take care over timing, particularly when using the AV resources, which can often last longer than expected. The conference values discussion; speakers should, therefore, allow the audience at least 10 minutes discussion time.

      MODE OF PAYMENT
      The registration fee is GH¢30.00 and covers admission to all sessions, conference materials, snack and lunch. However, graduate students will pay Gh¢15.00. Payment for registration is on-site to the Faculty of Education Accounts Officer, UCC
