Since the establishment of the Department of Chemistry in 1962, it has offered programmes in pure Chemistry for the Sciences, Education, Laboratory Technician and Agriculture students. The challenges and demands of the 21st century have made the study of the classical sciences no longer popular. Interest in them has waned; they have become moribund and no longer inviolable. Moreover the establishment of the School of Biological Sciences has made it necessary for the existing programmes in the remaining departments of the Science Faculty to be reviewed in line with the proposed School of Physical Sciences.
Admission requirements: Dept of Chemistry
The entry requirements are the same as for the School of Physical Sciences. However, the three elective subjects must include Elective Mathematics and any two of the following: Chemistry, Physics and Economics in the case of Bsc. (mathematics) and Bsc (Mathematics and statistics)
M. Phil./MSc. Programmes
Candidates seeking admission to M. Phil. /MSc. Degree must have obtained a good first degree in Chemistry in an approved University. Candidates should hold a degree in Chemistry which should normally be a second class Honours (Upper Division) or its equivalent. Candidates with second class (Lower Division) degrees will be considered if their G.P.A. is 2.8 and above
Candidates should normally be holders of an M.Sc./ M.Phil degree from an approved University.
It is the determination of the Department of Chemistry to be actively involved in the proposed School of Physical Sciences by delivering quality programmes of study that are academically stimulating and provide a solid basis for exciting and rewarding careers.
Within the purview of our vision the aims and objectives are as follows:
To produce graduates who can pursue the profession to the highest intellectual level.
To produce middle and high level personnel in chemistry and applied chemistry for the relevant sectors of the national economy such as agriculture, industry, education and health.
To turn out graduates who can make significant contribution to the social, political and economic lives of the people of this country.
