Faculty of Arts
Introduction
The Department of French is one of the nine (9) departments in the Faculty of Arts created since the establishment of the University of Cape Coast in 1964. It is located on the first floor of the first block in the new Faculty of Arts buildings. Since its inception, the department has been providing the French aspect of the training of:
a) Graduate teachers for second cycle institutions, and
b) Personnel for commerce, business and academia.
The department can boast of a distinguished record since 1964. It prides itself in being able to train about sixty percent of the full-time academic staff currently teaching in the department.
The department can also boast of one of the best-stocked departmental libraries in the University. It also has a well-equipped reading room with computers for M.Phil students and staff, a multimedia room with a satellite dish for Club activities and a mini-language laboratory.
Vision Statement
Give greater distinction to the Department as a centre for teaching and research in the area of Francophone studies.
Mission Statement
Produce, in the area of Francophone studies, educators who are also able to function in other areas of public/professional life.
Develop in students adequate mastery of the French language and the application of this mastery to the study of Francophone Literature, Civilisation, Thought Systems, Francophone Secretarial, Banking and Commercial Practices, and generally effective bilingualism in French and English.
Objectives
Develop in students sustainable research interests and capabilities which make for further self-improvement outside of the formal learning situation.
Undertake outreach and other community programmes, as well as consultancy services.
Forge links with Francophone African Universities through the Association of African Universities and the French Embassy in Accra, with French Universities.
