Programme Rationale

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension recognizes the urgent need to train high calibreagricultural economists to support the nation’s agricultural development efforts. The existing postgraduate programme at the Masters level has the limitation of research diversification, capacity building for programme renewal and human resource development in Agricultural Economics for research and higher learning institutions.

Programme Objectives

The PhD programme in Agricultural Economics has the main aim to equip candidates with the necessary tools of analysis and professional competence in Agricultural Economics to be able to function independently in the competitive global environment.

The programme specific objectives are to:

  1. Assist students to build sound conceptual, theoretical and technical knowledge base in Agricultural Economics
  2. Assist students to develop desirable attributes for research and scholarly activities for professional development
  3. Train high calibre Agricultural Economists at the PhD level for universities and research organizations in Ghana and beyond.

Admission Requirements


To be admitted to the programme for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics (hereafter referred to as “the Programme”), a candidate must have a researched M.Phil in Agricultural Economics or a related field from an accredited University.
