Overview

The Faculty of Arts is one of the Faculties in the University of Cape Coast. The focus of the Faculty is to promote teaching, research and extension of various aspects of Liberal Arts.

 

Vision Statement

To become a centre of excellence in teaching, learning, research, documentation, empowerment, applications, and self-extension of Liberal Arts.

 

Mission Statement

Training and equipping people in the Liberal Arts for effective development of their communities through: Providing the space for the development of high calibre persons in critical thinking and reflection; Seeking dynamic ways of reconstructing programmes and projects to respond to the contemporary needs of the faculty; Addressing the national requirements of highly skilled and equipped personnel in African Studies, Classics and Philosophy, English Language, French, Ghanaian Languages, History, Music and Theatre Studies and Religious Studies; Undertaking relevant research and documentation in Liberal Arts; Establishing linkages with institutions within and outside Ghana for the enhancement of the vision of the Faculty.

 

Goals & Objectives

  • To generate resources both internally and externally to enable the faculty fulfil its vision and mission
  • To progressively introduce new programmes and revamp old ones in response to changes in the national, global intellectual, political, economic, religious and socio-cultural contexts
  • To develop programmes that allow flexibility and freedom in the choice of courses in the Faculty as well as encouraging inter-disciplinary studies
  • Unique characteristics
  • Sited in historic Cape Coast, a short distance from the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles and other places of historical significance
  • Provides forum for inter-disciplinary research, lectures, and conferences
  • Quarterly publishes two scientific journals : Asemka (for language and literary works) and Drumspeak (for general subjects
  • Offers short and long term courses in English Language and Literature to non-English learners
  • Offers short and long term courses in African Studies to both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians
  • Enjoys cordial student-staff relations through Student/Staff Consultative Committees at faculty and department levels
  • Has excellent conference and seminar facilities for the exchange of ideas ; and a conducive atmosphere for academic pursuits
  • Offers attractive, academic credit courses in African Diaspora studies and the slave trade
  • Educating people, transforming minds, preparing world-class leaders for the 21st century

 

Basic Entry Requirements:

The Minimum Admission Requirement into the University of Cape Coast for WASSCE applicants is aggregate 36. For SSSCE applicants, the minimun requirement is aggregate 24.

Candidates must have passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE level respectively

Three of the six subjects must be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives.

For purposes of admission, a pass in

(i) WASSCE means Grade: A1 – C6.

(ii) SSSCE means Grade: A – D.
